Baculoviruses are the most prominent virus that infect insect populations.

Composition:

  • DNA
    • Contains anywhere from 80,000 to 180,000 base pairs
    • double stranded - circular supercoiled DNA molecules in a rod-shaped capsid
    • ORFs (Open Reading Frames) range ~120-160
    • Homologous regions (hrs)located throughout genome
      • Small repeated sequences.
      • Enhance early gene transcription
      • Act as ORI’s (origin of replications)

Many genes have overlapping ends

Properties:

  • Exhibit properties of both lytic and occluded life cycles
